Most people, when considering undergoing laser hair removal, have many questions about the process, including how often they need to undergo treatment, what’s involved, and if the hair removal is permanent. The truth is that the laser hair removal process, while very effective in removing hair, is not a permanent solution, although it does achieve hair removal/reduction for sometimes long periods of time and is non-invasive unlike waxing or “electrolysis“.
How Laser Hair Removal Works
Laser hair removal, one of the most popular methods of hair removal, is basically a process that warms up the hair follicles, causing them to stop new hairs from appearing. Laser treatment in effect puts the skin hair follicles into a state of dormancy, of which the length can differ based on the patient, their skin type and genetics. This type of hair removal is the most common aesthetic procedure that is performed daily in salons everywhere.
A laser light latches on to the hair follicle going underneath the skin and traveling downward to the base or root of the hair. This laser essentially utilizes your hair to absorb heat. This results in a faster treatment in comparison to electrolysis, which is much more time consuming. If performed properly, laser hair removal can be less painful than other methods and is very effective in removing hair from larger areas of the body including legs, backs and chests.
Certain hair types react better to treatment than others, which also equates to the length of time that the hair will be dormant before beginning to grow again. The lasers used in this process target melanin, the pigment that gives skin and hair their color. In general, people with darker hair have more melanin, which results in more success with treatment over people with lighter hair types.
Laser hair removal definitely removes hair for longer periods of time than traditional shaving and waxing treatments. But expect to have to undergo multiple treatments which will lead to long term hair reduction. This process is usually very effective in removing 80%-90% of hair for varying lengths of time. If you have questions about the process, it’s always a good idea to research online as well as consult with your aesthetician. They will sit with you to explain what to expect in terms of the process and the results. Got more questions? We can help. Call our spa at 239.561.6282 for a FREE consultation.
